Adrian Peterson May Be Suspended, But He's Unlikely To Lose Any Pay - Forbes.com

The NFL has recently announced that Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will be suspended for the remainder of the 2014 season, without pay. Peterson will likely earn his full pay for the entire 2014 NFL. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) published a statement immediately after the NFL’s announcement of a stern punishment against Peterson. The NFLPA will appeal Peterson's suspension. This is important because Peterson will continue to be paid during the pendency of his appeal.

The NFL will look like they did the right thing by suspending him without pay, but in reality he is still getting paid. Peterson will continue to get paid. Meanwhile, the NFL will look like it took strong action against the running back.

From an economic stand point it was very smart of the NFL to suspend Peterson and "appear" to suspend him without pay. If the NFL appeared to be soft with the punishment there would be a massive response from NFL fans and non NFL fans, and it would not be a good one. Less people would watch the NFL games, attend games, and buy NFL apparel.

  1. Even though I don't agree with what they are doing, I will admit that was a pretty good move.

  2. Even though I may not agree with his suspension, I do believe that if a player gets suspended, their pay should halt. You shouldn't be able to kill someone (example) and still receive millions.

  4. I suppose, in reality, the NFL is a firm. The goal of a firm is to maximize profits, and while it may not be right what they are doing, they are simply acting the way you would expect a profit-maximizing firm to act.

  5. I agree with you about the NFL looking stern with the punishing of Peterson. I think that Peterson deserves to be punished harshly because he made himself and the NFL look bad.

  7. I think the NFL is way too involved in the personal lives of their players. It does not help that the media blows things way out of proportion. I still cannot believe AP was punished this severely for punishing his kid. If this would have happened 20-30 years ago, people would not have thought anything of it. It would have been considered parenting. This shows how much society has changed.

  8. I agree with billy the NFL should just worry about football not there players personal life. Now if a player does some bad football related boom they should jump on it. But if it isn't they need to just mind there own business and keep on moving toward with making the nfl a better company. Because they NFL could be so much better then it is.
